2 Introduction ANYONE CAN BE A WINNER; IT’S JUST A MATTER OF FINDING THE LEVEL YOU WANT TO WIN AT. The main reason I wrote this book is to show you how to be a winner. It has taken me forty years to write, and it encapsulates the teachings from some of the greatest coaches in the world who have guided me in mastering the principles of winning in life. Through their wisdom and my personal experiences, I am now ready to share these ideals with you, helping you achieve your goals and realize your full potential. Anyone can be a winner; it's just a matter of finding the level you want to win at. Winning isn't limited to the elite or the exceptionally talented—it's accessible to everyone. The key lies in identifying what success means to you per-sonally and setting your sights on achieving it. Whether it's winning gold, excelling in your career, mastering a new skill, or improving your personal relationships, the path to winning is unique for each individual.

3 Success is not one-size-fits-all. It's about understanding your strengths, setting realistic yet challenging goals, and consistently working towards them with determination and perseverance. By focusing on your own journey and not comparing yourself to others, you can discover the level at which you can thrive and find fulfilment. Winning at your chosen level means celebrating your progress and recognizing that each step forward is a victory. It’s about having the courage to pursue your dreams, the resilience to overcome obstacles, and the confidence to keep moving forward. Remember, the true essence of winning is not just in the destination, but in the journey itself. Winning is having the desire, determination, and belief that no one can stop you. You must have a clear vision of what you want to achieve - your goals, your decisions, your commitment. You have to see the end game because if you can’t, how can anyone else see it for you? I can’t give you a magic bullet to be a winner, but I can teach you how to develop the mindset and skills needed to become one. You can’t be a winner until you believe winning is within your reach. It’s about trusting in your thoughts and knowing you can achieve anything, whether in business, sports, or life. You can achieve any goal you set for yourself, and I am proof of that. I am the: • Winner of the Berlin Marathon • Winner of over five hundred races • One of only a handful of British athletes to have won an international series marathon • Former 3000m world record holder

4 • Team Gold Medallist at the Commonwealth Games • Instrumental in the early development of HTML • Leader of a team of software engineers who built a 1-million-bit encryption engine, etc . . . It’s time now to stop hiding and making excuses. It’s time to start winning. Along the way, you will fail and lose at something. Failure doesn’t mean you’re a loser; it’s a benchmark indicating you’re one step closer to winning. If you haven't won yet, it’s likely due to a lack of prepara-tion and the right mindset. Success and becoming a winner depend on never giving up on yourself and having faith in your abilities. Change your thoughts, and it will change your life forever. As we move forward, keep an open mind and be ready to apply these insights to your own life. In the next chapter, "Winners Target Solutions," you'll learn how to identify and target the solutions that drive success. This is where we begin to turn our winning mindset into tangible actions and actual results. Let's get started.
